Dog Friendly Palm Beach County: Dog Beaches, Off-Leash Parks and Pet-Friendly Patios by City

A city by city guide to the dog beach, county and city dog parks, and dog-friendly patios in Palm Beach County, plus what dog owners should check in yards, fences and HOA rules before they buy.

If you want a dog friendly Palm Beach County home base, you have more choices than most people expect. The county runs four fenced dog parks, Jupiter has a long stretch of beach where dogs are welcome, and several cities run their own dog parks. Many restaurants also let dogs sit with you on the patio. This guide walks through the main spots by area. Then it covers what dog owners should look for in a yard, a fence and a set of HOA rules before they buy.

Key takeaways

  • Palm Beach County runs four public dog parks: Canine Cove, the Lake Ida West dog park, Lake Woof and Pooch Pines. All are open sunrise to sunset, with a weekly midday maintenance closure.
  • In Jupiter, dogs are allowed on the beach between dune walkovers 26 and 57, roughly from Ocean Cay Park to Carlin Park.
  • County rules require a current rabies shot and a county license tag for dogs 4 months and older.
  • Restaurants need a Dog Friendly Dining permit to let dogs on outdoor patios, and dogs never go inside.
  • Before you buy, check the fence, the yard, the pool barrier and the HOA pet rules in writing.

Why a dog friendly Palm Beach search starts with the map

Dog life here changes a lot from one area to the next. For example, a home in Jupiter puts you near the only long stretch of dog beach in the county. On the other hand, a home out west in Wellington or Royal Palm Beach usually means a bigger yard and a drive to the coast.

So start with how your dog spends the day. Some dogs need a daily swim or a long run. Others just need a shady walk and a quiet street. Once you know that, the right area gets easier to pick.

Also think about your own routine. A dog park ten minutes away gets used. One that takes forty minutes in traffic usually does not.

Jupiter: the dog friendly Palm Beach County beach

The Town of Jupiter allows dogs on the beach between dune walkovers 26 and 57. The town describes that as roughly the area between Ocean Cay Park and Carlin Park. It is the best known dog beach in the county, and locals and visitors use it every day.

The town's rules are short but firm. Dogs must stay under control, either on a leash or close to their owner and responding to voice commands. They must wear tags and licenses and have proof of a rabies shot. Owners must pick up all waste on the beach, the walkways and nearby areas. In addition, dogs may not create a nuisance, such as constant barking or chasing people.

A local nonprofit, Friends of Jupiter Beach, supports the dog beach. The group stocks waste bags at the crossovers along the dog beach. If you move to Jupiter with a dog, its events are a good way to meet neighbors.

Keep in mind that other public beaches can have very different rules. So check the posted signs before you bring your dog anywhere else on the sand. You can read more about the town on our Jupiter homes and market page.

Dog friendly Palm Beach County parks

Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation runs four fenced dog parks. All of them are open from sunrise to sunset. However, each one closes once a week from noon to 3 p.m. for maintenance.

  • Canine Cove at Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park, west of Boca Raton. It closes Wednesdays at midday.
  • Lake Ida West Park dog park in Delray Beach. It closes Thursdays at midday.
  • Lake Woof at John Prince Park, near Lake Worth Beach. It also closes Thursdays at midday.
  • Pooch Pines at Okeeheelee Park, west of West Palm Beach. It closes Wednesdays at midday.

The county splits the parks by size, with areas for dogs 30 pounds and up and dogs under 30 pounds. Dogs must be vaccinated and wear current licenses. Puppies under 4 months are not allowed, and each person may bring up to two dogs.

A few other rules are worth knowing. Dogs stay leashed when they enter and leave. Female dogs in heat are not allowed. Children 10 and younger must be watched by an adult. Finally, an owner must remove a dog that shows aggression right away.

Lake Woof and the Lake Worth Beach area

Lake Woof sits inside John Prince Park, a large county park. So for dog owners in Lake Worth Beach and nearby neighborhoods, it is one of the closest fenced options. The Lake Worth Beach page has current listing data for the city.

City dog parks by area

Several cities run their own dog parks. These are usually smaller than the county parks, and some have extra rules for residents and non-residents.

Palm Beach Gardens

Palm Beach Gardens has a dog park next to Lilac Park, off Lilac Street. The city says its parks are open from dawn until dusk. It is a handy stop for families who also use the park's playgrounds and trail. Read more about the city on our Palm Beach Gardens page.

Wellington

The Wellington Dog Park is on Greenbriar Boulevard. The village lists a large fenced off-leash area with sections for small, medium and large dogs. It also has shade pavilions, wash stations, water fountains and restrooms. Because many Wellington homes sit on larger lots, plenty of owners use the park mainly for socializing.

Boca Raton

Boca Raton's dog park is Mizner Bark, on Banyan Trail. It has three fenced areas: small dogs under 20 pounds, medium dogs from 20 to 50 pounds, and large dogs over 50 pounds. Entry requires a dog park vehicle permit. According to the city, the permit is free for city and Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District residents, while non-residents pay a fee.

Dog friendly Palm Beach patios and restaurants

Many dog friendly Palm Beach restaurants let your dog join you outside. Still, this is not automatic. Under Florida Statutes section 509.233, local governments can create a program that allows dogs in designated outdoor dining areas.

In Palm Beach County, a restaurant must get a Dog Friendly Dining permit before it can allow dogs on its patio. Palm Beach Gardens, for example, posts its own dog friendly dining application. The basic rules under the statute are simple:

  • Dogs stay in the marked outdoor area and never go inside.
  • Dogs must stay off chairs, tables and other furniture.
  • Staff should not touch the dogs while they serve food.
  • Tables and chairs get cleaned between guests.

So if a place says no dogs, it may simply not have the permit. In that case, ask about other seating or pick a spot that posts a dog friendly sign.

Palm Beach County rules for dog friendly living

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control requires all dogs and cats 4 months and older to have a current rabies vaccine and a county license tag. Your vet can usually handle both at the same visit.

The county also enforces leash rules. In fact, leash law violations are among the most common issues its field officers handle. So outside a fenced park or the marked dog beach, plan on keeping your dog leashed.

Also remember the heat. Summer pavement and sand get hot fast, so many owners walk early in the morning or after sunset. In addition, carry water on every outing.

Buying a dog friendly Palm Beach home: what to check

A great dog park nearby helps, but the home itself matters more. Here is what to look at before you make an offer.

The yard and fence

First, look at the fence height, the gate latches and any gaps at the bottom. Diggers and small dogs find gaps fast. Also check whether a fence is allowed at all. Some HOAs limit fence style, height or color.

Next, look at the ground cover. Grass, shade trees and a covered patio make Florida summers easier on a dog. On the other hand, a yard full of gravel or bare sand can get very hot.

The pool

Many homes here have a pool. That is great for some dogs, but it is also a safety risk. So check for a pool fence, alarms or a safety cover, and think about how your dog would get out of the water. Our guide to residential pool design covers layout ideas.

The HOA pet rules

Many communities limit the number of pets, their size or certain breeds. Some condos also have weight limits or require pets to be carried in common areas. So ask for the full rules in writing before you sign a contract. Our guide on how HOAs work in Florida explains how to read these documents.

Keep in mind that federal fair housing rules treat assistance animals differently from pets. If that applies to you, talk to the association and a qualified professional early.

Floors and layout

Tile and luxury vinyl plank hold up well to claws and wet paws. A side door or a mudroom near the yard helps too. Finally, a laundry sink or an outdoor shower makes beach days much easier to clean up after.

Which dog friendly Palm Beach areas fit your dog

Every dog is different, but a few patterns show up when buyers tell us what they want.

  • Beach dogs: Jupiter and nearby towns, because of the dog beach.
  • Big yard dogs: Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee and The Acreage, where lots tend to be larger.
  • City walkers: walkable parts of West Palm Beach, Delray Beach and Lake Worth Beach, with patios and sidewalks.
  • Park regulars: homes near Okeeheelee, John Prince or South County Regional Park.

Prices vary a lot across these areas too. For instance, according to Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026, the median list price of active listings was $859,495 in Jupiter and $899,000 in Palm Beach Gardens. So it pays to match the dog's needs with your budget early in the search.
