Treasure Coast Beaches for Port St. Lucie and Hobe Sound Residents: Access, Parking and Drive Times
October 1, 2026 · 8 min read · By Onias Derilus, Broker
Port St. Lucie has no ocean beach of its own, and Hobe Sound sits a bridge away from Jupiter Island. Here is which beaches each town actually uses, how parking and fees work, and what sea turtle season changes.
Treasure Coast beaches are a big reason people move to Port St. Lucie and Hobe Sound, but the two towns reach the sand in very different ways. Port St. Lucie sits on the mainland, so every ocean trip crosses the Indian River Lagoon. Hobe Sound is closer, with a short bridge to Jupiter Island. This guide covers the beaches each town uses, how parking and fees work, the sea turtle season rules, and how your street changes the drive.
Key takeaways
- Port St. Lucie has no ocean beach inside the city. Residents cross a causeway to Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie or Martin County.
- Martin County runs four guarded beaches: Jensen, Stuart, Bathtub Reef and Hobe Sound.
- The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge beach charges $5 a day or $25 a year per vehicle.
- Sea turtle nesting season runs March 1 to October 31 in Martin County and March 1 to November 15 in St. Lucie County.
- Drive time depends on how far west you live. Homes near US 1 reach the causeways much faster than homes near I-95 or the Turnpike.
How Treasure Coast beaches work for Port St. Lucie residents
Port St. Lucie sits along the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Lucie River, not the ocean. The barrier island across the lagoon is Hutchinson Island, and that is where the nearest ocean beaches are. So a beach day starts with a drive east to a causeway.
Most residents head one of two ways. Some drive south through Jensen Beach and cross the causeway to the Martin County beaches. Others drive north toward Fort Pierce and cross to the St. Lucie County beaches on South Hutchinson Island. Which one feels closer depends on where in the city you live.
Jensen Beach, the closest option for many
For much of the city, Jensen Beach is the go-to. Visit Florida describes Jensen Beach as part of Martin County, north of Stuart, with its main beach across a causeway on Hutchinson Island. The main park, Jensen Sea Turtle Beach, sits at 4191 NE Ocean Boulevard. It has restrooms, showers, picnic areas, pavilions, volleyball courts and a concession stand.
Parking is free, according to Visit Florida. However, Martin County's tourism office calls the lot small, so it can fill on busy weekends. In that case, a morning start helps. Martin County also lists Jensen as one of its guarded beaches.
St. Lucie County beaches on Hutchinson Island
St. Lucie County runs a string of beach parks along A1A on Hutchinson Island. Visit St. Lucie, the county tourism office, points families to Pepper Park, Walton Rocks, Waveland Beach, South Causeway Beach and Frederick Douglass Memorial Park.
Each one has a different feel. Waveland Beach has a lifeguard, restrooms, showers and free parking, according to Visit St. Lucie. It is also the start of a 13.2 mile bike path along A1A north toward Fort Pierce. Pepper Park has a guarded beach and shallow reefs about 100 yards offshore, plus the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in the park. Walton Rocks is the county's only beach that allows dogs. South Causeway Beach, near Fort Pierce, has calm water that suits small children. Frederick Douglass Memorial Park sits on an undeveloped stretch of coast and has covered picnic pavilions.
Treasure Coast beaches closest to Hobe Sound
Hobe Sound residents have a shorter trip. The town sits on the mainland in southern Martin County, and Jupiter Island lies just across the water. As a result, several very different beaches sit within easy reach.
Hobe Sound Beach
Hobe Sound Beach is the town's main public beach and one of Martin County's four guarded beaches. Martin County's tourism office notes reef breaks, a long sandbar and a quiet, undeveloped shoreline. It lists lifeguards, restrooms, picnic tables and showers. Surfers like it too.
Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge
The Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge has a beach parking lot on North Beach Road at the north end of Jupiter Island. You need an entrance pass for that lot. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service charges $5 a day or $25 a year per vehicle, and you can buy a pass on Recreation.gov. The refuge is open sunrise to sunset.
One rule surprises dog owners. Leashed dogs are allowed only on the trails around the visitor center, not on the beach. In addition, entry to the mainland tract and visitor center off SE Federal Highway is free.
Blowing Rocks Preserve
Blowing Rocks Preserve, run by The Nature Conservancy, is a 73 acre preserve on Jupiter Island. It has the largest Anastasia limestone shoreline on the Atlantic coast, the group says. At high tide with rough seas, waves can shoot water up to 50 feet through the rock.
The preserve is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with last entry at 4:15 p.m. It asks for an optional $2 donation per person. Parking is free but limited, and it often fills by late morning. There is no lifeguard, and pets, picnics and alcohol are not allowed. If the lot is full, the group points visitors to Coral Cove Park, about a mile south.
St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park
Martin County's tourism office also lists St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park among the beaches near Hobe Sound. Access there works differently from a county beach park, so check the Florida State Parks page for current directions and fees before you go.
Parking and fees at Treasure Coast beaches
Most county beach parks on both sides of the line have free parking. Still, there are a few exceptions and catches worth knowing before you go.
- Refuge beach. The Hobe Sound refuge lot needs a $5 daily or $25 annual pass.
- Blowing Rocks. Parking is free, but the lot is small and often full by late morning.
- Jensen. Free, but a small lot that fills on busy days.
- Waveland. Free parking, with a lifeguard on duty.
Fees and rules can change, so check the county or park page on the day you plan to go. For daily conditions in Martin County, the county's beach information line at (772) 320-3112 gives tide times, surf and how many lifeguard towers are open.
Sea turtle season rules on Treasure Coast beaches
Both counties protect nesting sea turtles, and the rules touch beach visitors and beachfront owners alike. The dates differ by county, though.
Martin County
Martin County's nesting season runs from March 1 through October 31. The county asks owners to turn off patio lights and close blinds so indoor light does not shine on the beach. It also asks beachgoers to fill in holes and knock down sand castles before they leave, since both can trap hatchlings. In addition, avoid flash photos at night.
St. Lucie County
In St. Lucie County, the season runs from March 1 through November 15. Between sunset and sunrise, exterior lights visible from the beach must be changed or turned off. The county also asks people not to leave beach furniture out overnight. Bonfires are discouraged during the season.
For buyers, this matters most on an oceanfront condo or house. Ask the seller or the HOA about turtle-safe lighting and window tint, since those rules apply to your home for most of the year.
Drive time to the beach by area
Port St. Lucie is a large city that stretches far west. So the same city can mean a short hop or a long drive to the ocean.
- East side near US 1 and the river. These neighborhoods sit closest to the Jensen Beach causeway and the roads north to Fort Pierce.
- Central neighborhoods. Expect a longer trip on Port St. Lucie Boulevard or Prima Vista Boulevard before you reach US 1.
- West side near I-95 and the Turnpike. Tradition and St. Lucie West sit farthest from the ocean. Beach trips here take planning, especially on summer weekends.
Before you buy, drive the route from the exact address on a Saturday morning. Map apps give a guess, but traffic on US 1 and the causeways changes the real number. In Hobe Sound, by contrast, most homes sit within a short drive of the Bridge Road crossing to Jupiter Island.
What Treasure Coast beaches mean for buyers
Beach access is part of the price. In Port St. Lucie, the trade is clear: you get more space for the money, and you drive to the ocean. See current homes on our Port St. Lucie page.
Hobe Sound costs more for the shorter trip. The same data showed 223 active listings in Hobe Sound, with a median list price of $549,250 and $303 per square foot.
