LGBTQ-Friendly Places to Live and Retire in Palm Beach County
October 1, 2026 · 8 min read · By Onias Derilus, Broker
Lake Worth Beach, West Palm Beach and Delray Beach each have public records you can check: local civil rights ordinances, partner registries, a community center and city-backed Pride events. Here is how they compare for retirees.
Finding LGBTQ friendly places to retire in Palm Beach County is easier when you look at facts you can check, not just reputations. Some cities here have local civil rights laws that name sexual orientation and gender identity. Some keep domestic partner registries, host Pride events or have a community center nearby. This guide compares Lake Worth Beach, West Palm Beach and Delray Beach on those public criteria. It does not try to describe who lives in each place. Instead, it gives you the records, so you can decide where you would feel at home.
Key takeaways
- Lake Worth Beach is home to Compass LGBTQ+ Community Center and hosts Palm Beach Pride, which Compass presents each spring.
- West Palm Beach has had an Equal Opportunity Ordinance covering sexual orientation since 1994, added gender identity and expression in 2007 and set up a domestic partnership registry in 2005.
- Delray Beach adopted an LGBT-inclusive civil rights ordinance in 2015, and the city hosts an annual Pride festival and concert.
- At the county level, Emergency Ordinance 2025-014, adopted June 3, 2025, suspended the use of references to gender identity or expression in county ordinances, resolutions, programs and policies. City rules can differ.
- We could not verify any LGBTQ-focused senior housing in the county, so ask direct questions of any 55+ community you tour.
How we compared LGBTQ friendly places to retire
"Friendly" is a feeling, and feelings are hard to measure. So this guide sticks to criteria anyone can verify:
- Local law: does the city have a civil rights or fair housing ordinance that covers sexual orientation and gender identity?
- Registries: does the city keep a domestic partnership registry?
- City contacts: does city hall name an LGBTQ+ liaison?
- Community groups: is there an LGBTQ+ community center nearby?
- Events: does the city host or welcome Pride events?
Each of these is public. In addition, each one can change, so check the current status before you buy. The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council keeps a timeline of local laws, and city websites list current programs.
Why Lake Worth Beach is among LGBTQ friendly places to retire
Lake Worth Beach is a small city with an older downtown, bungalows and cottages, and a beach on the barrier island. For LGBTQ retirees, it stands out for two reasons.
First, Compass LGBTQ+ Community Center is located at 201 N. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth Beach. The center lists support groups, health services and other programs. It does not highlight a senior-specific program on its home page, so ask what groups are open to older adults.
Second, the city hosts Palm Beach Pride. In 2026 the festival ran March 28 and 29 at Bryant Park, presented by Compass, with a parade on Sunday morning. If you want a big annual event close to home, this is it.
Local law in Lake Worth Beach
According to the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, the city added sexual orientation to its civil rights law in 2003. In 2016, it amended its fair housing law to cover sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The city also set up a domestic partnership registry in 2014.
On price, Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026 shows a median list price of $436,000 for active residential listings in Lake Worth Beach. That mixes condos and houses, so your number depends on what you want. Our Lake Worth Beach page shows current listings.
West Palm Beach: the longest local track record
West Palm Beach has the oldest set of local protections of the three. The city says it was the first public employer in Florida to bar discrimination based on sexual orientation, in 1991. In 1994, the city passed an Equal Opportunity Ordinance covering sexual orientation in employment, housing and public accommodations. It added gender identity and gender expression in 2007.
The city also set up a domestic partnership registry in 2005. Today, the mayor's office names an LGBTQ+ liaison, and the police department names its own LGBTQ+ liaison. For a newcomer, that gives you a named contact at city hall.
Housing choices in West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach has a wide range of homes. You will find downtown condos, older single-family neighborhoods and gated communities further west. Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026 shows a median list price of $315,000 for active residential listings in the city. That figure leans on the large number of condos for sale. Our West Palm Beach page has current listings by type.
Downtown living also puts you near the Brightline station, the waterfront and Clematis Street. Those draw retirees who want to walk more and drive less.
Delray Beach: city-hosted Pride and an inclusive ordinance
Delray Beach sits in the south of the county, between Boynton Beach and Boca Raton. Its downtown runs along Atlantic Avenue toward the beach.
The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council reports that Delray Beach enacted an LGBT-inclusive civil rights ordinance in 2015. The city also hosts an annual Pride festival and concert. Old School Square lists the event as presented by the City of Delray Beach, at the venue's amphitheater on North Swinton Avenue.
Housing choices in Delray Beach
Delray Beach has downtown condos and townhomes, older homes east of I-95 and large 55+ communities to the west. Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026 shows a median list price of $278,000 for active residential listings in the city. That number is pulled down by the many condos in western age-restricted communities, so homes near downtown usually list for more. See our Delray Beach page for local prices.
County rules for LGBTQ friendly places to retire, and what changed in 2025
Palm Beach County has its own Office of Equal Opportunity. It investigates complaints of discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. Its listed bases include sexual orientation, along with race, sex, age, disability and others.
However, there is an important change. The text of Emergency Ordinance 2025-014, adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on June 3, 2025, suspends the use of references to "gender identity or expression" in county ordinances, resolutions, programs and policies. The suspension lasts until further board action or two years from the effective date, whichever comes first. City ordinances are separate. So the protection you have can depend on whether you live inside a city with its own law or in an unincorporated area.
Because these rules can change, check the city and county websites before you make a decision. A local attorney can also explain how the rules apply to you.
LGBTQ friendly places to retire in a 55+ community
Many retirees in Palm Beach County choose age-restricted communities. We could not verify any LGBTQ-focused senior housing in the county. So the practical step is to ask good questions at each community you tour.
- Do the HOA documents define "family" or "spouse" in a way that affects partners?
- Who can be listed as an occupant, and what are the age rules for a younger partner?
- Are there social clubs, and are any LGBTQ+ groups active?
- How does the board handle complaints between neighbors?
Our guide on who can live in a 55+ community covers the age rules in more detail.
Side by side: three LGBTQ friendly places to retire
- Lake Worth Beach: community center in town, home of Palm Beach Pride, civil rights and fair housing laws covering sexual orientation and gender identity, partner registry since 2014.
- West Palm Beach: oldest local ordinance (1994), gender identity added in 2007, partner registry since 2005, named LGBTQ+ liaisons at city hall and police.
- Delray Beach: LGBT-inclusive civil rights ordinance since 2015, city-hosted annual Pride festival, large 55+ communities to the west.
Each city has strengths. Lake Worth Beach suits buyers who want a community center and a big Pride event close by. West Palm Beach suits buyers who want a longer legal track record and a downtown lifestyle. Delray Beach suits buyers who want a lively downtown and many 55+ options.
Practical steps before you buy
Once you have a short list, plan a few visits. If you can, come during a Pride weekend or a regular community center event. Then come back on a quiet weekday. Each visit shows you a different side of the place.
Next, look at the paperwork. Ask for the HOA or condo rules and read them before you make an offer. Pay attention to rules on guests, rentals and who may live in the home. If something is unclear, ask the board in writing.
Also plan for the legal side of a move. Many couples update their wills, health care proxies and the way they hold title when they buy in a new state. A Florida estate planning attorney can explain your choices. Our team can share how other buyers have handled title at closing, but legal advice should come from a lawyer.
Finally, think about daily life. Check the drive to your doctors, the nearest grocery store and the places you plan to spend time. A home that checks every legal box still needs to fit the way you want to live.
