Airports Near Palm Beach County: PBI vs. FLL vs. the Treasure Coast for Frequent Flyers

October 1, 2026 · 9 min read · By Onias Derilus, Broker

A plain comparison of the airports frequent flyers use from Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, with what each one offers and how airport access can shape where you buy.

If you fly often, the airports near Palm Beach County deserve a spot on your house-hunting checklist. Most buyers who relocate here compare two big airports and a few smaller ones. The main choices are the county's own airport in West Palm Beach, still known to most locals as PBI, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) in Broward County. North of the county, Treasure Coast buyers also weigh Vero Beach and the Fort Pierce airport. This guide covers what each one offers, how the rail links work, and how airport access affects where frequent flyers tend to buy.

Key takeaways

  • Palm Beach County's airport was renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 9, 2026. Its airport code changed from PBI to DJT on August 18, 2026, according to the airport.
  • The airport handled 8,657,372 passengers in 2025, up 3.0% from 2024, per its own traffic report. FLL is the larger airport, with more route choices.
  • FLL and the West Palm Beach airport both connect to Tri-Rail and Brightline by shuttle. Brightline also runs to Orlando International Airport.
  • Treasure Coast International Airport in Fort Pierce earned FAA Part 139 certification in 2024 but had no scheduled airline service in the sources we checked.
  • Port St. Lucie flyers often split trips between the West Palm Beach airport and Vero Beach Regional Airport, where Breeze Airways added five new routes in 2026.

The main airports near Palm Beach at a glance

Here is the short version. Each airport fits a different kind of traveler, so start with how you fly.

  • President Donald J. Trump International Airport (formerly PBI). It sits about 3 miles west of downtown West Palm Beach. It is the closest large airport for most of the county.
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL). It sits about 3 miles southwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale. It has far more passengers and more route choices.
  • Vero Beach Regional Airport (VRB). It is a small airport in Indian River County with a short list of nonstop routes.
  • Treasure Coast International Airport (FPR). This Fort Pierce airport mostly serves private and general aviation for now.
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO). It is far away, but Brightline trains from West Palm Beach and Boca Raton stop right at the airport.

Palm Beach's own airport: the renamed PBI

For most buyers in Palm Beach County, the home airport is the one in West Palm Beach. Palm Beach County's Department of Airports runs it. Under a state law signed March 30, 2026, it became President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 9, 2026. The airport says its code changed from PBI to DJT on August 18, 2026. NBC Miami reported that airlines and booking sites still let travelers search with the old PBI code during the switch. Many locals still call it PBI, and so will we in this guide.

The airport is busy but easy to use. Its December 2025 traffic report shows 8,657,372 passengers for calendar 2025, up 3.0% from 2024. For the 12 months ended August 2026, the total was 8,660,434. In that same period, JetBlue carried about 26% of boarding passengers and Delta about 25%, followed by American at about 20%. Southwest, Allegiant, United and several smaller carriers make up the rest.

Frequent flyers like PBI for its size. The terminal is compact, so the walk from the curb to the gate is short. However, the route map is smaller than FLL's. Many trips to big hubs are nonstop, but some smaller cities will need a connection.

Who lives closest to the West Palm Beach airport

The airport sits just west of downtown West Palm Beach, so the city's own neighborhoods have the easiest trips. Nearby choices include Palm Beach, Lake Worth Beach, Greenacres, Palm Springs and Royal Palm Beach. Wellington and Palm Beach Gardens are a bit farther out but still use PBI as their main airport. Our West Palm Beach area page covers the neighborhoods closest to the terminal.

Price ranges vary across that area. According to Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026, the median list price of active residential listings in West Palm Beach was $315,000. That figure mixes condos and houses, so a single-family home near the water will cost far more.

Fort Lauderdale: the bigger airport near Palm Beach County

FLL is the second airport most Palm Beach County flyers use. It is much larger than PBI, and Broward County's aviation department posts its traffic numbers on the FLL statistics page. JetBlue and Southwest run large operations there, and Allegiant has a base. Spirit Airlines, once the biggest carrier at FLL, stopped flying in May 2026, so check current schedules before you book.

The trade-off is simple. FLL usually has more nonstop routes and more international flights. On the other hand, it is a longer drive from most of Palm Beach County, and the airport itself is busier. So many locals check fares at both airports and pick the better deal for each trip. Our guide to nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale lists where you can fly from FLL.

Boca Raton sits between two airports near Palm Beach

Boca Raton sits between the two big airports, so many residents use both. South Boca is closer to FLL, while north Boca is a little closer to PBI. That flexibility is one reason frequent flyers and business travelers like the city.

Boca also has its own Brightline station downtown, which helps on trips to Orlando or Miami. According to Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026, the median list price of active residential listings in Boca Raton was $550,000. Our Boca Raton page breaks down the city's neighborhoods and listings.

Treasure Coast airports near Palm Beach for northern buyers

North of the county line, airport choices thin out. Buyers looking at Hobe Sound, Stuart or Port St. Lucie have three realistic options. They can drive south to the West Palm Beach airport, fly from Vero Beach, or wait to see if Fort Pierce lands airline service.

Vero Beach, a small option among airports near Palm Beach

Vero Beach is a small airport with a short list of nonstop routes. In June 2026, Breeze Airways added five new nonstop routes from Vero Beach. They go to Atlantic City, Baltimore, Burlington, Provo and Trenton. The same report noted that American Airlines had launched service to Charlotte, a major hub.

For snowbirds who fly to the Northeast a few times a year, Vero Beach can save a long drive. Still, schedules at small airports can change by season. If your route is not on the list, you will likely end up at PBI.

Treasure Coast International Airport in Fort Pierce

Treasure Coast International Airport sits northwest of downtown Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County. In October 2024 it earned Part 139 certification from the FAA, which allows it to host commercial airline service. At the time, county leaders said they were still talking with airlines. However, we did not find any scheduled airline flights there in the sources we checked. For now it mainly serves private planes, flight schools and charter traffic.

If airline service does start, it would be a short trip for many Port St. Lucie residents. Until then, treat it as a possible future benefit, not a reason to buy.

Port St. Lucie and the airport question

Port St. Lucie is the biggest city on the Treasure Coast, and it draws many relocating buyers. Most residents who fly often use PBI for the widest choice of airlines. Some also use Vero Beach for the routes it covers. According to Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026, the median list price of active residential listings in Port St. Lucie was $429,000. See our Port St. Lucie page for more on the city.

Rail links that connect the airports near Palm Beach

Rail can make a farther airport more practical. Both big airports in the region tie into the rail system. Brightline runs between Miami and Orlando with stops in Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. Its Orlando station sits inside Orlando International Airport, so you can ride from West Palm Beach or Boca straight to MCO.

Tri-Rail also helps. Its Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport station in Dania Beach has a free shuttle to the FLL terminals. In West Palm Beach, Palm Tran buses link the airport with the Tri-Rail and Brightline stations. As a result, a home near a train station can widen your airport choices without a long drive.

How airport access shapes where frequent flyers buy

Airport access is only one factor in a home search. Even so, for people who fly every week or two, it can tip the choice between two towns. Here are the patterns we see most often.

  • Weekly business travelers often favor West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Wellington or the central county, close to PBI.
  • Travelers who need many nonstop routes often look at Boca Raton or Delray Beach, so FLL stays within reach.
  • Snowbirds who fly north a few times a year are more flexible. Many happily trade a longer airport drive for more house in Port St. Lucie or Jupiter.
  • Owners of private planes look at general aviation airports such as Fort Pierce and the county's smaller airfields.

Noise matters too. A home under a flight path can feel very different at 6 a.m. than at a weekend showing. So visit at a few times of day, and check the airport's noise contour maps before you write an offer.

Market context for the airports near Palm Beach

Prices also differ by property type. In August 2026, according to Miami Realtors, Palm Beach County's single-family median sale price was $650,000. Homes went under contract in a median of 40 days, with 3.5 months of supply. Condos and townhouses had a $300,000 median, 69 median days to contract and 6.7 months of supply. Frequent flyers who want a lock-and-leave home often pick a condo, and that segment gives buyers more room to negotiate.
