Getting Around Palm Beach County: I-95, the Turnpike, Tri-Rail and Rush-Hour Commutes by City
October 1, 2026 · 8 min read · By Onias Derilus, Broker
How I-95, the Turnpike, Tri-Rail and Palm Tran shape daily travel in Palm Beach County, and how relocating buyers can weigh home prices against drive time by city.
Your Palm Beach County commute can shape where you buy as much as price, schools or the beach. The county is long and narrow, and most jobs sit near the coast, along I-95. So a home that costs less in the western suburbs or farther north may add real time to every workday. This guide maps the main highways and east-west roads, the train and bus options, the busiest times of day, and how to test a drive before you sign a contract.
Key takeaways
- I-95 and Florida's Turnpike carry most north-south trips. They run roughly parallel, with the Turnpike farther west and tolled.
- Tri-Rail serves six stations in Palm Beach County, from Mangonia Park in the north to Boca Raton in the south, with connections south into Broward and Miami-Dade.
- Palm Tran runs 29 fixed bus routes with about 2,700 stops, plus a weekday PSL Express between Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach.
- FDOT's 95 Express program extends tolled express lanes north from Broward into southern Palm Beach County, up to Linton Boulevard in Delray Beach.
- Asking prices vary widely by city. Comparing them with drive time is the best way to judge a trade-off.
How the Palm Beach County commute is laid out
Think of the county as a grid with a few strong north-south lines and many slower east-west roads. Most offices, hospitals and the downtown West Palm Beach core sit east of the Turnpike. Meanwhile, many newer and larger homes sit to the west, in places like Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee and The Acreage.
As a result, a typical daily trip has two parts. First you drive east on a surface road to reach I-95 or the Turnpike. Then you head north or south. The east-west leg is often where the time goes, because it runs through traffic lights rather than interchanges.
The main north-south routes
- I-95. The busiest route, close to the coast, with exits for downtown West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton.
- Florida's Turnpike. A tolled highway west of I-95. It often feels calmer, but it has fewer exits.
- US 1 and Federal Highway. Local roads near the water, slow but useful for short trips between coastal towns.
- Military Trail, Congress Avenue, Jog Road and State Road 7. Long surface roads that many residents use to skip the highways for mid-length trips.
The main east-west roads
Key east-west routes include Southern Boulevard, Okeechobee Boulevard, Forest Hill Boulevard, Lake Worth Road, Boynton Beach Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue, Glades Road and PGA Boulevard. Each one feeds a cluster of neighborhoods. So before you fall for a house, find out which of these roads you would use every morning.
Peak hours on a Palm Beach County commute
Traffic in the county follows a familiar pattern. Weekday mornings bring heavy flows toward the coast and south toward Broward. Evenings reverse it. School drop-off and pick-up times add pressure near campuses on surface roads.
Season matters too. Winter brings part-time residents and visitors, and many locals say roads feel busier from roughly late fall through spring. In addition, bridge openings on the Intracoastal can hold up trips to and from the barrier islands.
Because conditions change by the hour, avoid relying on a single average drive time. Instead, test the real trip at the real time, which we explain below.
Tri-Rail and a Palm Beach County commute by train
Tri-Rail is the region's commuter train. According to Tri-Rail, its Palm Beach County stops include Mangonia Park, West Palm Beach, Lake Worth Beach, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton. The line continues south through Broward County and into Miami-Dade.
The train makes the most sense if you live near a station and work near one too. For instance, someone living near the Boca Raton or Delray Beach station who works in Fort Lauderdale may find the train less stressful than I-95. On the other hand, if your office is far from a stop, the extra bus or ride-share leg can erase the benefit.
Brightline, the private intercity train, also stops in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. It is more often used for trips to Fort Lauderdale, Miami or Orlando than for daily commuting, but some riders use it for regular work trips.
Palm Tran buses and the PSL Express
The county bus system, Palm Tran, runs 29 fixed routes with about 2,700 bus stops across Palm Beach County. It also offers Connection, a paratransit service for eligible riders, and Go Glades, a dial-a-ride service in the western Glades area.
For buyers looking north, one service stands out. Palm Tran's PSL Express is a weekday commuter route between Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach. That gives some St. Lucie County residents an option besides driving the full trip every day. In addition, Palm Tran notes that Tri-Rail riders can use its buses for free airport rides.
Check current schedules before you plan around any route. Palm Tran made service changes on several routes in September 2026, and schedules can change again.
Express lanes and road projects to watch
The Florida Department of Transportation has spent years building tolled express lanes on I-95 in South Florida. 95 Express lanes already run through Miami-Dade and Broward. Phase 3C, now under construction, extends them into southern Palm Beach County, up to Linton Boulevard in Delray Beach, as WPTV reported when the plan was announced.
Express lanes charge tolls. So they can save time on a bad day, but they add to your monthly costs. If you buy in south county and commute to Broward, include that toll in your budget, the same way you would include gas.
Road work also changes travel times while it lasts. Before you buy, look up any planned widening or interchange projects near the home. A project can slow a commute for a year or more, though it may help once it is done.
Palm Beach County commute by city: what to expect
Here is a simple way to think about the main buying areas. These are general patterns, not promises, since your trip depends on your exact address and job.
West Palm Beach and the coastal cities
Living near the coast usually means the shortest trips to downtown jobs, hospitals and the airport. According to Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026, the median list price of active listings in West Palm Beach was $315,000, with condos and houses mixed together. That figure includes many condos, which helps explain the lower number.
Boca Raton and south county
South county works well for people who commute to Broward. The Boca Raton and Delray Beach Tri-Rail stations, along with I-95 and the Turnpike, offer several ways south. Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026 shows a median list price of $550,000 for active listings in Boca Raton.
The western suburbs
Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee and The Acreage offer more space and larger lots. However, most trips start with a long drive east on Southern Boulevard, Okeechobee Boulevard or Forest Hill Boulevard. As of October 1, 2026, Pure Equity's MLS data shows median list prices of $915,000 in Wellington and $499,900 in Royal Palm Beach. So the west is not always cheaper. You trade drive time for land and newer homes.
Port St. Lucie and the Treasure Coast
Some buyers look north to St. Lucie County for more house per dollar. Pure Equity's MLS data as of October 1, 2026 shows a median list price of $429,000 in Port St. Lucie. The trip south to Palm Beach County jobs uses I-95 or the Turnpike and is a long daily drive for most people. Still, it can work for hybrid workers who only go in a few days a week, or for riders who can use the PSL Express.
How to test a Palm Beach County commute before you buy
- Pick two or three homes you like and note the exact addresses.
- Drive from each one to your workplace on a weekday, at the time you would really leave.
- Do the return trip at your normal evening time.
- Repeat once in season, if you can, since winter traffic often feels heavier.
- Check the nearest Tri-Rail station or Palm Tran stop and time that route too.
- Add tolls, parking and fuel to your monthly budget.
Then compare the yearly cost of the commute with the price difference between homes. A cheaper home that adds hours each week may not be the better deal. On the other hand, if you work from home most days, a longer drive may matter much less.
Simple commute math for hybrid workers
Hybrid schedules change the trade-off. For example, if you go to the office two days a week, a long drive happens about 100 times a year instead of 250. That can make a larger home farther out easier to accept. However, job rules change, so ask yourself whether you could still live with the drive five days a week. If the answer is no, give the closer home more weight.
Also think about the people in your household. A spouse with a different job, kids with school runs, or a parent with medical visits can all change which location works best.
