Hobe Sound at a glance
Hobe Sound is a census-designated place in southern Martin County, north of West Palm Beach. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it had 13,163 residents in the 2020 Census, up from 11,521 in the 2010 Census. Jonathan Dickinson State Park lies to the south, with Jupiter Island across the water to the east.
The town has an unusual past. The area has also been known as Olympia and Picture City, and the Hobe Sound Historical Society works to preserve that history. Today, the community is known more for nature and privacy than for big attractions. For a broader look at homes, taxes and schools, see our guide to living in Hobe Sound.
Things to do in Hobe Sound's wildlife refuge
The Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge is the town's best-known outdoor spot. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it protects 3.5 miles of Atlantic beach, the largest stretch of undeveloped beach in southeast Florida. It is also one of the most productive sea turtle nesting areas in the southeastern United States.
The refuge shelters nearly 40 threatened, endangered or special concern species. Beyond the beach, it includes sand pine scrub and nearly 10 miles of mangroves along the Indian River Lagoon. Entry costs $5 a day or $25 for an annual pass, according to the agency.
Visiting the beach section
The beach part of the refuge sits at the north end of Jupiter Island. Most people drive east on Bridge Road, cross the water and head north. According to Florida Rambler, there are no lifeguards, pets are not allowed and the water gets deep quickly. So it is better for walking, shelling and quiet time than for small children.
The visitor center and trails
The refuge's visitor center is on U.S. 1, separate from the beach. It has live displays of reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects. The refuge also offers sea turtle walks, which are popular with families and new residents.
Things to do in Hobe Sound's biggest park: Jonathan Dickinson
Just south of town, Jonathan Dickinson State Park covers more than 10,000 acres and is the largest state park in Southeast Florida, according to Florida State Parks. For many residents, it works like a giant backyard.
The Loxahatchee River runs through the park. In 1985 it was designated a National Wild and Scenic River. Kayaking and paddling on the river are favorite weekend activities, and the park also has hiking, paved and off-road biking and equestrian trails.
Historic things to do in Hobe Sound's state park
The park has some surprising history. During World War II, a secret military training camp operated here. Along the river, a man known as Trapper Nelson built a homestead and became known as the "Wild Man of the Loxahatchee." Rangers lead tours of his pioneer homestead site, which is part of the park today.
One note: the Hobe Mountain observation tower inside the park has been closed for more than two years because of safety concerns, according to WPTV. Check the park's current status before you plan a visit around it.
Beach things to do in Hobe Sound and on Jupiter Island
Jupiter Island sits between the Intracoastal and the ocean, east of Hobe Sound. It holds several of the area's best beach stops.
Hobe Sound Beach
Hobe Sound Beach is the main guarded public beach. Martin County lists it at 1 SE Beach Road, with lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. The county also offers free beach wheelchairs there on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is limited on busy days, so arrive early.
Blowing Rocks Preserve
Farther south on the island, The Nature Conservancy's Blowing Rocks Preserve is known for its rocky shoreline. At high tide in rough seas, waves can force plumes of salt water up to 50 feet into the air. The preserve is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and it asks for an optional $2 donation per person.
Parking is free, but the lot fills quickly. In addition, street parking is not allowed under Town of Jupiter Island rules. The preserve points visitors to overflow parking at Coral Cove Beach Park, about a mile south.
Things to do in Hobe Sound's downtown
Downtown Hobe Sound is small. It centers on Bridge Road, near the Florida East Coast Railway tracks, with local shops, restaurants and services. You will not find a big entertainment district here, and most locals like it that way.
Martin County's Hobe Sound Community Redevelopment Area has a plan to make Bridge Road a more business- and pedestrian-friendly main street. The stated goal is to protect the area's small-town character while improving streets and sidewalks.
Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve
Close to downtown, the county's Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve covers 28 acres south of Bridge Road, between U.S. 1 and Dixie Highway. It sits on an ancient sand dune and has a shell rock trail, a scrub ridge trail, a picnic pavilion and outdoor exercise stations. Many residents use it for a quick morning walk.
More things to do in Hobe Sound with family or friends
Beyond the big parks, much of life here is simple and outdoors. Here are some easy ideas for a typical week.
- Morning walk: loop the Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve trails before the heat builds.
- Paddle: launch a kayak or canoe on the Loxahatchee River at Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
- Turtle season: join a refuge sea turtle walk during nesting season.
- Beach day: pick the guarded Hobe Sound Beach for kids, or the refuge beach for solitude.
- Sea spray: visit Blowing Rocks at high tide on a rough day.
- Lunch out: try a local spot along Bridge Road, then browse the nearby shops.
Planning things to do in Hobe Sound by season
The calendar shapes life here more than you might expect. From about December through April, the weather is mild and dry, which makes it the best time for long hikes, bike rides and full beach days. It is also when parking at popular spots fills fastest.
Summer brings heat, humidity and afternoon storms. Most locals shift outdoor plans to early morning and save the afternoon for errands or a swim. Sea turtle nesting also runs through the warmer months, so beach rules about lights and nests matter more then.
Hurricane season runs from June through November. Parks and beaches may close before and after a storm. So check official park pages and county alerts before you head out, especially in late summer and fall.
How daily life compares with Jupiter and Stuart
Hobe Sound sits between two busier towns. To the south, Jupiter offers more restaurants, waterfront dining hubs and shopping. To the north, Stuart is the Martin County seat, with its own historic downtown and riverfront. Hobe Sound feels quieter than either one.
For many buyers, that is the appeal. You trade some convenience for less traffic, more trees and easy access to protected land. On the other hand, nights out and big-box shopping usually mean a drive. If you want a deeper side-by-side look, read our comparison of Hobe Sound vs Jupiter.
