Market Overview
Hendry County sits in the rural interior of South Florida, just south and west of Lake Okeechobee. Its two main communities are LaBelle, the county seat on the Caloosahatchee River, and Clewiston on the southern shore of the lake. This is agricultural country. Sugar cane fields stretch across much of the eastern part of the county, and citrus, cattle, and row crops fill out the rest. The pace is slower than the coast, the lots are larger, and the cost of living is among the lowest in the region.
For buyers priced out of the coastal counties, Hendry County offers real value. Single-family homes, manufactured homes on acreage, ranch parcels, and raw land all trade at prices well below what similar property would cost in Lee, Collier, or Palm Beach counties. Many buyers come here specifically for land, whether for a homestead, a small farm, horses, or hunting and recreation. LaBelle has a historic small-town core and an annual Swamp Cabbage Festival that reflects the area's Old Florida character, while Clewiston is known as America's Sweetest Town for its central role in the sugar industry.
Clewiston also sits at the edge of Lake Okeechobee, the second-largest freshwater lake entirely within the United States. The lake draws anglers from across the country for some of the best largemouth bass and crappie fishing in Florida, and the Herbert Hoover Dike and the surrounding rim canal shape a good deal of the local recreation. Boating, airboating, and waterfowl hunting are part of the lifestyle for many residents, and the lake's marinas and fish camps support a steady flow of seasonal visitors. The Caloosahatchee River, which connects the lake to the Gulf of Mexico through the Okeechobee Waterway, runs through LaBelle and gives that side of the county its own riverfront appeal. The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, a paved path that runs along the top of the dike, adds cycling and walking to the mix and offers wide views over the water and the surrounding farmland.
Because Hendry County is rural, buyers should understand a few practical points. Many properties rely on well and septic systems rather than municipal water and sewer, and parcels can be zoned agricultural, which affects financing and intended use. Acreage and homesteads here can qualify for agricultural classifications that lower the tax burden. Distances to major shopping, hospitals, and employment centers in Fort Myers or on the coast are longer than many newcomers expect, so commute and convenience are worth weighing against the affordability and space.
