Where Does Andy Garcia Live in Florida? His Key Biscayne Bayfront Home
September 21, 2026 · 8 min read · By Onias Derilus, Broker
Andy Garcia grew up in Miami Beach, fell for Key Biscayne in college, and rebuilt a bayfront home there after Hurricane Andrew. He lives mostly in Los Angeles. Here is what the New York Times and local reporting say about the house and what the island costs today.
Where does Andy Garcia live? Most of the year he lives in Los Angeles, where he has worked since 1978. But his Florida home is on Key Biscayne, a barrier island south of Miami Beach, in a bayfront house he rebuilt after Hurricane Andrew flattened the first one. The New York Times toured it in 2006. He told the paper his family comes in summer and on vacations. Here is what reporting says about the house, his long tie to the island, and what Key Biscayne homes cost now.
Key takeaways
- Key Biscayne, on Biscayne Bay: a five-bedroom house completed in 1999 to replace one Hurricane Andrew destroyed in 1992.
- Price not reported; the Times cited a 2005 tax assessment of about $1.77 million for the building and $2.18 million for the land.
- A music studio, wraparound verandas, a pool and a pier, in a style meant to look like a 1920s Cuban plantation house.
- Key Biscayne median list price is about $2.48 million across roughly 180 active listings, per our MLS feed as of September 2026.
Where does Andy Garcia live in Florida?
His Florida home is on Key Biscayne. The island sits at the end of the Rickenbacker Causeway, south of Miami Beach and east of Coconut Grove. It has one village, two big parks at either end, and a mix of bayfront houses and oceanfront condos in between. It is quiet, and the causeway toll keeps casual traffic out.
Garcia's tie to the Key goes back to college. Islander News, the island's paper, told the story in 2024. He arrived from Havana in 1961 at age five, grew up in a one-bedroom apartment in North Miami Beach, and went to Miami Beach Senior High and then FIU. He spent weekends on Key Biscayne beaches, met his future wife Marivi there, and rented an apartment on the island before moving to California in 1978.
A 1992 Deseret News profile said the family kept a second home in Coral Gables at that time. Later reporting places the house on Key Biscayne, and the Times said so plainly in 2006. Pure Equity does not publish private addresses, so we name the island only. You can see current inventory on our Key Biscayne page.
Inside the reported Key Biscayne home
The New York Times visited in April 2006 for a feature on the house. The original home on the site was lost to Hurricane Andrew in August 1992. Garcia hired Miami architect Deborah De Leon to design its replacement and gave her a sketch based on his memory of old Cuban houses. Construction wrapped in 1999.
The Times described five bedrooms, wraparound verandas, a swimming pool and a pier on the bay where he kept two fishing boats. The house has a separate music studio where he composes and records; Garcia is a working percussionist and producer as well as an actor. Inside, the paper noted 1950s Cuban conga drums, a Steinway piano, a bar and a great-room table that seats twelve.
No sale price exists because he did not buy a finished house. He owned the lot, lost the home, and built new. The Times cited the 2005 county assessment instead: about $1.77 million for the building and $2.18 million for the land, or roughly $3.95 million together. A blog post from 2011 rounded that to a $4 million house. Assessments run below market, so the real value was higher even then.
The style is the notable thing. De Leon's design was meant to look as if it had stood since the 1920s or 30s, with deep porches for shade. That is a rare choice on Key Biscayne, where most post-Andrew rebuilds went modern.
What Hurricane Andrew did to the island
The storm is the reason the island looks the way it does. Andrew crossed the southern edge of Miami-Dade in 1992 and stripped older wood-frame houses off their lots. What went back up had to meet the toughest wind code in the country. So a 1999 house like Garcia's, however old it looks, has concrete walls, impact glass and a roof built for a Category 5 storm. Buyers on the Key pay for that, and insurers price it too.
Why Garcia keeps a home on Key Biscayne
The reason is personal, and he has said so. He told Islander News he is a Key Rat and feels at home the moment he is on the island. He courted his wife there. His parents settled in Miami after leaving Cuba, and much of the Cuban exile community that shaped his films lives within a few miles.
Work brings him back too. He has shot in Miami, plays and produces Cuban music with local musicians, and has appeared at events to save the Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key, the island just across the causeway. The house's studio lets him record between film jobs without flying to a Los Angeles session.
The rebuild itself says something. After Andrew, many owners on the Key sold the lot and left. Garcia spent seven years on a replacement designed to his own memory of Cuba. That is not a vacation-home decision; it is a decision to keep a foothold near where he grew up.
Where else does Andy Garcia live?
Los Angeles is the primary home. He moved there in 1978 to act, married Marivi in 1982, and raised four children there. Celebrity-home sites describe a house in the Toluca Lake area of the San Fernando Valley; we found no major-outlet confirmation of the neighborhood, so treat that as unconfirmed.
The pattern he described to the Times in 2006 still holds in the 2024 Islander News piece: mostly California, with summers and holidays on the Key. In short, the Florida house is a second home with deep roots, not a primary residence.
What homes near Andy Garcia cost
Key Biscayne is a small, steady market. Our MLS feed as of September 2026 shows about 180 active listings on the island with a median list price near $2.48 million and an average of about 115 days on market. That median blends condos on the ocean side with single-family homes in the village.
Bayfront houses like Garcia's sit at the top of the island market. Lots on the bay with a dock are scarce, and rebuilt homes on them trade well into eight figures. The 2005 assessment the Times cited would not come close today. For owners, that means the land carries most of the value, as it did when Garcia rebuilt.
The mainland alternatives are close by. Coral Gables, where his family had a home in the early 1990s, carries a median near $2 million across about 440 listings. Coconut Grove, at the foot of the causeway, sits near $3.25 million across about 60 listings. Both have bayfront pockets with the same dock-and-pool setup.
