Where Does Bill Gates Live in Florida? Inside His Wellington Horse Farms

September 21, 2026 · 8 min read · By Onias Derilus, Broker

Bill Gates does not live in Florida full time, but he owns a cluster of equestrian estates in Wellington that reporting values at about $38 million. They exist for his daughter Jennifer's show jumping. Here is what was bought, what was sold, and what horse farms nearby cost.

Where does Bill Gates live? His primary home is in Medina, Washington, on Lake Washington outside Seattle. Florida is a second base, and a specific one: Gates owns a group of equestrian estates in Wellington, the horse village in western Palm Beach County. Reporting puts the total at about $38 million for six properties on one street. They exist for his daughter Jennifer, a show jumper who competes there each winter. Here is what is reported about the farms, what he sold, and what horse properties nearby cost.

Key takeaways

  • Wellington, Mallet Hill: a run of equestrian estates in the Mallet Hill section of Palm Beach Polo, bought between 2013 and 2016.
  • Reported spend: about $38.4 million for six properties covering roughly 18 acres, starting with an $8.7 million farm in 2013.
  • Sold in 2022: a separate 5.5-acre farm bought in 2019 for $21 million sold for $26 million.
  • Not a primary home: Gates lives in Washington state; the Florida farms are for the winter show season.

Where does Bill Gates live in Florida?

The Florida answer is Wellington, and more precisely the Mallet Hill section of Palm Beach Polo. Mallet Hill is a gated pocket of large equestrian lots a short hack from the show grounds. Gates first bought there in 2013. By 2016, The Real Deal reported, his purchases covered an entire street, Mallet Hill Court, and about 18 acres.

The reason is Jennifer Gates, his eldest daughter. She rides in the Winter Equestrian Festival, the 13-week circuit that runs in Wellington from January into April. Her stable operates under the name Evergate Stables. The New York Post reported that Gates first rented in Wellington in 2011 to support her riding, then started buying.

That history matters for how you read the headline. Gates does not spend the year in Palm Beach County. The farms are a seasonal base built around a competition calendar. Pure Equity does not publish private addresses, and this post names the community only.

Inside the reported Mallet Hill estates

The first purchase set the pattern. In June 2013 Forbes reported that Gates paid $8.7 million for a 4.5-acre estate in Mallet Hill. The house dates to 2010 and has four bedrooms, four baths and a 7,234-square-foot open plan. More important for a rider, the property came with a 20-stall barn and a show-jumping arena.

The rest followed in 2016, according to The Real Deal and a later Benzinga summary. He paid $13.5 million for the 4.5-acre property next door. Two vacant lots went for nearly $5 million. Then came a 5.2-acre estate with barns and a home for $8.7 million, and finally a 1.3-acre lot for $2.5 million. The Real Deal put the total at $38.4 million for six properties. It also noted he paid well above appraised value to secure neighboring lots.

A trust tied to Gates then paid $21 million for a separate Wellington horse farm in July 2019, The Real Deal reported. That one did not stay in the family long. In March 2022 the same trust sold the 5.5-acre farm for $26 million to a Delaware entity, while keeping the Mallet Hill Court holdings.

What has he kept? The Real Deal reported that the trust still held the Mallet Hill Court properties after the 2022 sale. That includes the original 2013 farm and the neighboring estate bought in 2016. In other words, the street he assembled is intact. The farm he sold was the outlier, bought later and elsewhere in the village.

Why Bill Gates chose Wellington

The choice was Jennifer's sport, not the weather. Wellington is the center of American show jumping from January to April. Riders who want to compete at the top level base themselves there for the season. The closer the barn is to the show ring, the easier the daily routine. Mallet Hill sits inside the Palm Beach Polo grounds, near the international arena.

The season also explains the timing. The first farm closed in June 2013, just after that year's festival ended. Buyers in Wellington tend to shop during the show, when they can see how a barn works on a competition day, and close once the horses have gone north for the summer. His first purchase followed that rhythm, and the 2016 additions filled in the rest of the street.

Buying a whole street also bought privacy. The Real Deal reported that Gates paid two to three times appraised value for some lots. That only makes sense if the goal was control of the surroundings rather than a good deal. Jennifer married Egyptian rider Nayel Nassar, and both have competed out of Wellington. So the farms serve a working stable rather than a vacation home.

Where else does Bill Gates live?

Home is Medina, Washington. His lakefront estate there, often called Xanadu 2.0, has been his main residence since the 1990s. Everything else is secondary. Gates has also bought for Jennifer outside Florida. In 2018 he purchased a 124-acre equestrian estate in North Salem, New York, reportedly valued at $15.8 million. It was a graduation gift when she finished at Stanford.

So the pattern is a Washington primary home, a summer show base in Westchester County, and a winter show base in Wellington. None of the Florida properties has ever been described as his residence. What homes near Bill Gates cost

Wellington prices split into two markets. Our MLS feed as of September 2026 shows about 544 active listings in the village. The median asking price is near $925,000, and homes average roughly 117 days on market. That median mostly reflects suburban homes. Equestrian estates with barns and arenas in Palm Beach Polo, Mallet Hill or Palm Beach Point trade in the many millions, as the Gates purchases show.

Two things drive an equestrian estate's price in Wellington: distance to the show grounds and the quality of the barn. A farm you can ride to the ring from, like those in Mallet Hill, avoids trailering every day. Stall count, arena footing and turnout space matter next. That is part of why Gates paid well above appraised value for some of his parcels.

The New York Post reported in May 2026 that Wellington home values rose nearly 118 percent over the past decade. One 47-acre facility was asking $48.5 million. Six-month seasonal rentals of ordinary estates can run $55,000 a month. Buyers can browse our equestrian homes hub and homes with acreage to see what is on the market now.

For owners, the takeaway is that the winter season sets the calendar. Farms listed in the fall meet buyers who arrive in January with a reason to close before the circuit ends. Our luxury homes hub tracks the top of that market across South Florida.
