Where Does Erik Spoelstra Live in Florida? The Coral Gables Home and the Fire

September 21, 2026 · 8 min read · By Onias Derilus, Broker

Erik Spoelstra bought a five-bedroom home in the Ponce-Davis area near Coral Gables for a reported $6.6 million in December 2023. A fire gutted it in November 2025 while he was flying home from a game. Here is what reporting says about that house, his earlier Coconut Grove and Coral Gables homes, and what the area costs now.

Where does Erik Spoelstra live? The Miami Heat head coach has lived in the Coral Gables area of Miami-Dade County for most of his adult life. His most recent home was in Ponce-Davis, the estate neighborhood between Coral Gables and Pinecrest. He bought it in December 2023 for a reported $6.6 million. On November 6, 2025, a fire gutted the house while he was on the team plane back from Denver. No one was hurt, and where he has lived since has not been reported. Here is what is on the record about that home and the ones before it.

Key takeaways

  • Ponce-Davis, near Coral Gables: a five-bedroom home on a large lot in the enclave between Coral Gables and Pinecrest, bought in December 2023.
  • Reported price and year: $6.6 million per WSVN, $6.5 million per Insurance Journal; property records cited by local outlets date the purchase to December 2023.
  • The fire: broke out about 4:30 a.m. on November 6, 2025; more than 20 fire units responded; officials called the house a total loss.
  • Earlier homes: a 1937 Coconut Grove house bought for $2.6 million in 2016 and sold for $2.475 million in 2017, then a waterfront home bought for $4.395 million in 2017, per The Real Deal.

Where does Erik Spoelstra live in Florida?

Spoelstra grew up in Portland, Oregon, but he has been in Miami since 1995, when he joined the Heat as a video coordinator. Three decades later he is the longest-tenured head coach in the NBA. His home life has followed a short arc across a few miles of south Miami-Dade. Every home reported for him sits between Coconut Grove and Pinecrest, within 20 minutes of the Kaseya Center.

The most recent is in Ponce-Davis. It is an unincorporated pocket of Miami-Dade County wedged between Coral Gables and Pinecrest, and most coverage simply calls it Coral Gables. The neighborhood has large lots, mature trees and no through traffic, and it draws athletes and executives who want acreage close to the city. WSVN reported that Spoelstra bought a five-bedroom home there for $6.6 million in December 2023 and had been renovating it since.

That house is now gone. Early on November 6, 2025, a fire tore through it. Sports Illustrated, ESPN and CBS Miami all covered the blaze, and local officials described the house as a total loss. Spoelstra was on the Heat charter from Denver when it started and landed about half an hour after the first call. He coached the team's next game.

Pure Equity does not publish private addresses. We name the neighborhood and nothing more. Our Coral Gables and Pinecrest city pages cover the markets on either side of Ponce-Davis, and the Miami-Dade County page puts them in context.

Inside the reported Ponce-Davis home and the fire

Details on the house itself are thin, because it was mid-renovation and never listed with photos under his name. WSVN described a five-bedroom, multimillion-dollar home on a large lot that had been under extensive renovation since the 2023 purchase. Insurance Journal put the price at $6.5 million, a rounding difference from WSVN's $6.6 million. No outlet gave a square footage we can rely on.

The fire is better documented. Sports Illustrated reported that it started around 4:30 a.m. and that Miami-Dade Fire Rescue sent more than 20 units, including aerial trucks and a hazardous materials team. Flames reached the height of the trees, per neighbors quoted by Flashscore. Crews kept the fire from spreading to nearby homes. The cause had not been made public in the coverage we saw.

What happens next is an open question. A total loss on a large Ponce-Davis lot usually means a rebuild, since the land holds most of the value. Spoelstra has said nothing public about his plans, and no permit or sale has been reported as of September 2026. We will update this post if that changes.

The Coconut Grove and Coral Gables homes before it

The Real Deal traced two earlier moves. In 2016, ahead of his July wedding to Nikki Sapp, a former Heat dancer, Spoelstra paid $2.6 million for a renovated 1937 Plantation-style house in Coconut Grove. It had five bedrooms and about 4,294 square feet. He sold it in February 2017 for $2.475 million, a $125,000 loss, which is unusual for a Grove house in that period.

The reason was an upgrade. The same month, The Real Deal reported that he bought a waterfront home for $4.395 million. Coverage placed it in the Coral Gables area, and it served as the family home for the next several years. That property has not been reported as sold, so it may still be in the family, or it may have changed hands quietly. We do not know, and we say so.

Why Erik Spoelstra chose the Gables

The plain reason is work. His team practices and plays at the Kaseya Center on Biscayne Boulevard. The Coral Gables and Pinecrest corridor is the closest cluster of large-lot neighborhoods to it. Pat Riley lived in Gables Estates for 16 years for the same reason. Alonzo Mourning and other Heat figures have lived in the same few square miles.

The other reason is family. Spoelstra and Sapp have three children, and the Gables area has the county's best-known private and public schools. The Coconut Grove house, the waterfront home and the Ponce-Davis lot all sit in that school zone. Each move reads as a step toward more space for a growing family rather than a change of scene.

He has not spoken about real estate in public, and we do not attribute reasons to him beyond what the pattern shows.

Where does Erik Spoelstra live when not in Miami?

Nowhere permanent, as far as reporting goes. Spoelstra's job puts him on the road for half the season, and he coached the U.S. national team in 2024 as an assistant, which added summer travel. He returns to Portland, where his parents live and where he played college ball at the University of Portland. No outlet has reported a home there or anywhere else outside Florida.

After the fire, the family's whereabouts were not reported, which is the right call for a private matter. What is public is that he stayed on the bench, and the Heat organization rallied around him.

What homes near Erik Spoelstra cost

Ponce-Davis does not have its own page in our feed, but its neighbors do. Coral Gables had about 440 active listings in our MLS feed as of September 2026. The median list price is near $2 million, and homes average about 130 days on market. Pinecrest, on the other side of Ponce-Davis, had about 170 listings at a median near $5.1 million. Ponce-Davis prices track closer to Pinecrest, since the lots are similar.

Coconut Grove, where Spoelstra bought his first reported home, had about 57 listings at a median near $3.25 million. That is up sharply from the $2.6 million he paid for a five-bedroom house there in 2016, which shows how far the Grove has moved.

For buyers looking at the same corridor, our luxury homes hub lists sales above $1 million and the waterfront homes hub covers the canal and bay lots in Coral Gables. The homes with acreage hub is the closest match for Ponce-Davis lots.
